Sevens is a work in the making by Nina Rajarani MBE and Y Yadavan who recently explored new creative processes through CPD work with mentors Chitra Visweswaran and Rajkumar Bharathi of Chennai, India. This personal development for the artists was followed by an R&D period to create this “work in progress” to be showcased at Srishti’s Silver Jubilee show at the Harrow Arts Centre, the Navadisha conference in Birmingham, and at Alchemy, London, hosted by Akademi.

Sevens is based on the theme of “saptapadi” (seven steps), the most important rite of a Hindu marriage ceremony.  With each step the bride and groom take a vow.  Although an age-old tradition, even today these practical promises are relevant, not only to a marriage, but to any committed relationship between two people. The piece also draws analogies between other significant occurrences of the number seven – seven notes, seven colours of the rainbow, connection to one’s partner extending over seven lives and so on.
