City professionals by day, Kathak dancers by night, Umran Naqvi and Pranav Yajnik perform in Akademi’s Navodit. Taking off their suits and donning their angarkhas, lawyers Umran and Pranav escape the stress of the city by getting to business on the dance floor every evening. NAVODIT showcases classical Indian dance and supports emerging artists as they rise and establish themselves as part the cultural landscape of the UK. Akademi provided these two artists with focussed Kathak mentoring by Fasih ur Rehman and guided them through the complexities of production process, readying them for performance and providing opportunities to establish themselves as professional South Asian Dancers.

Audiences have the chance to see the traditional Indian style of Kathak performed powerfully in a rarely seen all male cast. Inspired by the greats such as Pt Birju Maharaj and Kumudini Lakhia, the boys bring the discipline and routine of city life into their Kathak, a style renowned for its intricate rhythms and fluidity. As a male in a female dominated industry the going can be tough, especially as in Indian culture, dance is traditionally expected from girls. However, these rising contemporary stars have broken moulds by finding balance between the success of their jobs and artistic careers, and come together to create a production truly rare for a dance stage.
