Kathak dancer and choreographer Nahid Siddiqui gives an insight into the creation of her new work.

Based on the writings of 17th-century Sufi poet Hazrat Baba Bulleh Shah, Maati explores the interconnectedness between life and the earth. It aims to capture the essence of the Sufi folk spirit of the Punjab through the subtle nuances of kathak dance.

Shah’s humanist poetry describes the turbulence of his motherland, split between Pakistan and India, and highlights his spiritual voyage through Sufism.

Nahid Siddiqui is accompanied by her son, percussionist and music composer Hassan Mohyeddin.

Hear more about the piece from the artists in a post-show discussion, taking place in Spirit Level (Blue Room) at Royal Festival Hall after the performance.

Presented in partnership with Akademi, South Asian Dance.
