Experience the very best of non-Western theatre as the Kala Chethena Kathakali Theatre Company prepare for and perform a Keralan ‘story play’. Kathakali originated in the 17th century in temples. It embraces dance, drama, music, visual arts and ritual to create a powerful and emotional form of visual storytelling. In addition to watching a performance, you can see the colourful costumes up close and watch the application of elaborate three dimensional make-up, known as Chutti. Chutti transforms the actors into gods, kings, devils and princesses, allowing them to tell universal stories where good and evil battle for supremacy and mythology comes alive. Production supported by Akademi.
